Notification Policy

How Map.ca decides what notifications are sent, how often, and how users control them.

Notifications respect attention. The Notification Policy defines the categories (transactional, civic, social, marketing), the default-on and default-off states by category, the frequency caps, the channel preferences (in-app, email, push), and the unsubscribe granularity. Marketing notifications are default-off; transactional and civic notifications respect user-controlled overrides.

It applies to the Map.ca product teams shipping notifications, the AI team scoring notification relevance, and any partner triggering Map.ca notifications.

Requirements

  • Set marketing notifications to default-off.
  • Provide per-category unsubscribe controls.

Prohibitions

  • Do not trigger marketing notifications without consent.
  • Do not bury notification controls behind multiple settings layers.
